Data Logger

A data logger (also datalogger or data_logger or data recorder) is an electronic device that records or logs data over time with Time Stamp. It acquires data through built in sensor or via external instruments and sensors. Data loggers are normally based on a digital processor (or computer). They generally are small, battery or mains supply powered, portable, and equipped with a microprocessor, internal memory for data storage, and sensors. Now-a-days data loggers interface with a personal computer and utilize software to download the data from data logger and view and analyze the collected data, while others have a local interface device like keypad & LCD for programming and printer for data output to work as a stand-alone device.

Types of Data loggers vary between general purpose types for a range of measurement applications to very specific devices for measuring in one environment or application type only. General purpose types of data loggers are programmable or also called as Universal Input Data loggers. However, many remain as static machines with only a limited number or no changeable parameters. Electronic data loggers have replaced chart recorders in many applications as it automatically collects data with Timestamp on 24-hour basis, it can be left unattended for days or months, has no moving parts so no wear & tear, no changing of paper or pens. .

Data loggers are single channel or multichannel. Normally the recording capacity of data loggers is few thousand readings, but the latest loggers with facility to interface pen drive or flash card can record millions of readings. .

The cost of data loggers has been declining over the years as technology improves and costs are reduced. Simple single channel data loggers cost as little as $25. More complicated loggers may costs hundreds or thousands of dollars.
